Media and Electoral Propaganda: A Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy of Stupidity

CNN’s failure to question Paul Ryan’s falsehoods is emblematic of the idiot wind blowing through American electoral politics.

Why does the media want us to focus on vapid details about a candidate’s family or past- instead of his politics?

Pro-Israel Mormonism Makes Romney Sweetheart for American Jews
Pro-Israel Mormonism Makes Romney Sweetheart for American Jews

'The very fact that his Mormonism makes him less popular among evangelical Christians almost certainly makes him more popular among American Jews. Academic analysis of the intersection of religion and politics suggests that Jews maintain a distinctly—and surprisingly—favorable view of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.'

God and Caesar in America: Mixing Religion and Politics Is Bad for Both

'In the wake of the Great Recession it would seem natural that the 2012 election would be fought over economic issues. Yet so far in the Republican primaries, we have seen social issues, and religion especially, move to the forefront. Rick Santorum is only the latest in a series of Republicans who have infused their campaigns with talk about God. Even Mitt Romney, a Mormon who has generally tried to avoid discussing religion, has recently pledged to defend “religious liberty” against the Obama administration.'

The Russian Orthodox Church: Public Protest and Elite Politics

'The Russian Duma elections of December, 2011 contained many surprises, starting of course with the nature of the public reaction. On the eve of the election, almost no one anticipated that blatant falsification of electoral results would spark not just widespread indignation but also the largest mass protests the Russian Federation has seen since the early 1990s. Still less did anyone predict that prominent members of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) would add their voices to the social upheaval. For the larger part of the last decade, the ROC had garnered the reputation of an institution closely linked to the upper echelons of power. This image was cemented by frequent joint appearances by high-ranking bishops and politicians, most strikingly exemplified by the role played by the Patriarch in the presidential inauguration ceremonies.'

'The above image of Rick Santorum came to Gawker's tips line with the subject line “santorum pictures (REAL!!!!)” Using Dan Savage's infamous neologism for “the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex,” the tipster explained, “this is my friend with santorum himself with a sign that appears to be made from santorum. this is 100% real.” Pressed for details, the tipster admitted the sign was made with paint. Nonetheless, the idea of a Santorum sign made with santorum piqued our interest. Is it possible? How much santorum would it take?'

Pew Forum: Religion and the 2012 Florida Republican Primary

'In his commanding win in the 2012 Florida Republican primary, Mitt Romney received strong support from Catholics and from voters who do not describe themselves as white born-again/evangelical Christians, according to results from the National Election Pool exit poll. Among both white evangelicals and Protestant voters, Romney ran about even with Newt Gingrich. Romney’s performance among Florida evangelicals represents an improvement over his showing in Iowa (where he lost to Rick Santorum among evangelicals) and in South Carolina (where evangelicals supported Gingrich). Romney’s share of the Florida evangelical vote was roughly comparable to the share of the evangelical vote he received in New Hampshire (36% of evangelicals in Florida voted for him, as did 31% of evangelicals in New Hampshire)'
