Islamist Morsi named Egypt’s president

“Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt’s first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.”

I still can’t figure out if an islamic president is good for the democratic process or not… what do you think?

Heaven On Earth: A Non-Hysterical History of Shari’ah
Heaven On Earth: A Non-Hysterical History of Shari’ah

‘Islamophobic discourse rarely changes in any meaningful way; indeed, it remains quite similar to the anti-Semitism it disingenuously claims to have foresworn. But superficially, Islamophobia rapidly mutates, sniffing out whatever Arabic words its untalented bigots can find—throwing them against the wall, and seeing which most creeps out the mainstream. “Hijab.” “Minaret.” “Taqiyya.”’

Mystic Propaganda: Islamophobia and the 2012 Presidential Race

‘When, in the last years, Marine Corps Intelligence put together a report on the practice of “cultural Islam” in Afghanistan, it noted that “Afghans are a traditionally superstitious culture,” specifically referencing the weight given to dreams and symbols as well as “practices…such as the evil eye superstition.” The “official use only” document noted that the Taliban sometimes plays to “Afghan mystical traditions” in its propaganda, but also uses Afghans’ “fear of God to… turn locals against United States forces.” Through their heavily footnoted 12-page analysis, Marine Intel hoped to provide U.S. troops with a useful primer on Afghanistan’s history, religious beliefs, cultural practices, and social mores to help troops to counteract insurgent “information operations.”’

Religion has always sought Politics to keep its Societal Hegemony

‘President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran will soon reveal “very big new nuclear achievements.” Ahmadinejad spoke at a rally in Tehran on Saturday as Iranians marked the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution that toppled the country’s pro-Western monarchy and brought Islamic clerics to power. Ahmadinejad did not elaborate on the upcoming announcement but insisted Iran would never give up its uranium enrichment — a process that makes material for reactors as well as weapons.’

Egyptian Christians Say Christian Political Party Is Not Solution To Attacks On Coptics

‘Despite continuous attacks on Coptic Christians, a delegation of Egyptian Christian leaders said Wednesday they do not support the development of a Christian political party as a possible solution. “We don’t need to add more divisions than what we have,” said Atef Gendy, president of the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, who addressed a Washington summit hosted by the World Evangelical Alliance.

“I think abstaining from religious parties will help even more, and working with reasonable, moderate Muslims will provide much stability to the country.” Coptic Christians, who constitute about 10 percent of the mostly Muslim country’s population, are fearful of continuing repression as candidates of the Muslim Brotherhood and ultraconservative Salafis gained the majority of parliament seats in recent elections.’

America’s Muslim Anxiety: Lessons from The Third Jihad

‘The NYPD’s Third Jihad controversy presents many questions for those who track the politics of and about Islam in the contemporary United States. For instance, one wonders what the airing of such a film in a “training”—presumably a context for teaching tactics and strategies in preventing crime—says about the institutional cultures of American police forces more generally. As scandals surrounding racial profiling on the part of police officers have consistently underscored, the inculcation of and reliance on prejudicial caricatures of criminals by the police constitutes a threat to citizenship in general. My concern here, however, is a broader theme related to The Third Jihad scandal: the Islamophobic conceit that American Muslims pose an imminent threat to American secularism.’
