‘Hackers purporting to be members of the nebulous online hacker community Anonymous have reportedly hit almost 400 websites in China. Targets included the Tongcheng Environmental Protection Agency, a Chinese government site from which phone and email information were stolen, and the Jiangsu Cyberpolice Online Service, for which a cross-site scripting vulnerability was posted.’

‘Several al-Qaida chat rooms and forums, including its primary website Shumukah al-Islam, have been offline for several days in what experts believe was a coordinated cyberattack. Reports have speculated the action is the work of government intelligence agencies, which have been reluctant in the past to take down jihadist websites because they believe them to be a valuable source of information. The debate continues in U.S. intelligence and policymaking circles about the value of attacking terrorist-group websites.’

‘Hector Xavier Monsegur, an unemployed computer programmer reportedly living on welfare in New York, was the ringleader operating under the name “Sabu,” federal authorities say. He pleaded guilty to a dozen computer crimes including conspiracy. But the indictment handed down by the US Attorney of New York’s southern district also said he cooperated with authorities to help round up other high-level hackers during a months-long investigation.’
