‘For months, Catholic religious leaders have waged a PR campaign criticizing the Obama administration for allegedly infringing on their religious liberties. They’ve blasted, among other things, an administration requirement (since rescinded) that institutions affiliated with religious organizations offer contraceptive coverage in their health insurance plans. Religious conservatives are also fuming that the administration declined to renew a contract with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to provide services for human trafficking victims, because the group refused to provide referrals for contraception and abortion to sexual assault victims.’

“As the father of a daughter who is near the age that many of these girls are sold, and as a rabbi who works on the difficult issue of educating young men, I had to come to terms with the reality that Israeli sex traffickers have enslaved close to 4,000 minors and the police have done relatively little to stop it. And as I read more about the growth of the sex trade industry, I became increasingly convinced that this is one issue that men should be standing up for. Certainly we should be standing up because we are generally compassionate and decent beings and we believe that these women and girls are victims of a horrific form of indignity. But we should also be standing up because of the corrosive effect that the rising success of the global sex trafficking business is having on men.”

‘While Indianapolis businesses prepare to greet thousands of enthusiastic sports fans, local nuns are working make sure the celebration surrounding Super Bowl XLVI doesn’t include incidents of human trafficking. Eleven congregations of Catholic nuns have partnered with Indianapolis area hotels to educate workers about prostitution and sex trafficking, which are often byproducts of large sporting events, according to the Catholic News Service.’
